Gun Rights

James Madison worked tirelessly to get the Bill of Rights passed. Included in that Bill of Rights is the following amendment:

A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.

Firearms have been a significant part of the history of our great nation, and our state. Responsible gun ownership is a fine tradition, passed down through generations. We use firearms for personal protection, sport, and to put food on the table.

Therefore, I support:

  1. Resisting any attempt to ban any type of firearm, as bans are ineffective.
  2. Encouraging law-abiding citizens to get a conceal carry permit, as the training is highly beneficial for even the most seasoned gun owner.
  3. Support red flag laws, as there should be mechanisms in place to temporarily remove guns (through a court order) from those who represent an immediate harm to themselves or others. This would have to include a mechanism for reversal as well.
  4. Requiring gun shows to issue purchase permits to all gun-buyers who wish to purchase firearms from private sellers. (This would include a background check performed through local sheriff departments)
  5. Resisting any attempt to require citizens register in a database the number, type, or kinds of firearms they own.
  6. The study of gun-related violence as a health-issue.
